Overview of Corporate Law
The law market in NI is emerging and getting very busy again. Specifically the area of corporate law is in a very healthy state and an exciting range of career options are opening up like never before. Traditionally, to form a post-qualified career as a specialist Corporate Solicitor options were limited. You opted for a large practice in Belfast or you jumped on a plane to London or train to Dublin. Now things are changing.
Northern Ireland is home to eleven Chambers and Partners listed Practices (Band 1-3) and they provide outstanding opportunities to start, develop and succeed as a Corporate Solicitor. Many of these award-winning firms provide a strong investment in their teams and provide access to a high quality of work with clients with cross-border requirements along with demands for GB and Europe. So local or dual qualified professionals are in demand. More medium-sized practices are starting to pursue expansions into wider corporate / commercial law. Options therefore exist – the generic role to cover key corporate / commercial aspects of MBO, VC, M&A, disposals etc; or the larger practices who can build a team inclusive of niche professionals in areas such as IP/IT, media, energy.
However the local legal landscape now has new neighbours with many large international brands setting up a significant base in town. The market is now offering alternate career paths with alternate work environments and company cultures in these global brands. New roles are also emerging which enable and encourage lawyers to deploy a wider set of (management) skills. Additionally, many Corporate lawyers are attracted to the emerging sector of In-House positions and while many are permanent, a growing range of fixed term / interim contracts are also providing interesting flexible (work-life balance) options for experienced solicitors as well.
The region is changing once again with several positive factors providing encouraging signs for the world of corporate law. The high profile pursuit of lower Corporate Tax for Northern Ireland continues to provide encouragement of continued capital and corporate investment. The past 12 months for NI has witnessed positive momentum of foreign direct investment via Invest NI with record job creation, record start-ups of new business and high level of jobs created from the local indigenous and established business community. On a social-economic level, more professionals are seeking to relocate or migrate their talent so the supply base is broadening as well.
