Recent Activity:

Over the past year or so, there has been a high level of activity within the NI Legal market with plenty of talking points and mostly positive. Recently within Practice, some firms have made strategic appointments at a Senior/Partner level. Many firms have demonstrated higher retention levels of their trainees which is always a good sign for the future. Global firms continue to look at Belfast favourably as they value the skills and capability, availability and attitude of the local talent pool. Northern Ireland is now ‘home’ to a range of impressive International legal brands and the legal team in Abacus has met several others that have Belfast on radar.


A pressure point for demand is Corporate law, with many firms in NI competing for a shallow pool of Corporate Lawyers. Although many lawyer salaries are reasonably stable year on year, due to continued demand and limited supply, salaries levels for Corporate solicitors are expected to lift especially for key demand areas within this field such as:

  • Experienced PQE corporate lawyers based in NI (e.g. 3-6 yr PQE)
  • Lower to mid-level PQE GB or dual qualified (e.g. 1-4 yr PQE)
  • Niche specialists will generate premium salary levels – e.g. energy, projects, IP/IT/Tech – from capital market such as Dublin, London, Manchester
