Top employment tips for Grads.

It’s time to show off the skills employers really want to see.

With the amount of high calibre graduates actively seeking jobs on the rise, it is vital that graduates are pro-active and show off the skills the employers really want to see.

Whilst what you were taught at university is important it’s not just about the skills learned – it’s the knowledge you built up along the way, and the type of person that this experience has moulded you into.   Abacus have teamed up with leading graduate employers to find out what things employers are really looking for?

1) A positive attitude

We all know that one person who is no fun to be around.  They are always moaning, complaining, or dull and seem to never be upbeat, excited or positive.  There is nothing worse than working with someone like this who is always negative.  At the other end of the scale having a strong positive attitude will turn your world around, you’ll notice people communicating with you differently, offering advice and you’ll be presented with more opportunities.

2) Be Confident

Portraying confidence shows you’re an employee who can be trusted, will fit into a team and is a benefit to the company.  Many employers are seeking employees that are confident but not arrogant.  Having a firm handshake, ability to make eye contact and good body language at interview are all tell-tale signs of a confident person. Tip from Abacus; being confident in the office also has its benefit, showing you can work hard and that you are highly capable of carrying out all tasks and duties required independently will leave a positive outlook for your employer. Sooner rather than later having all that confidence could lead to you being able to explore other revenues to progress your career within the business.

3) Professional Social Media Profile(s)

Employers don’t mind seeing your personality online but you need to always try to keep it professional.  Photo’s chugging beer, controversial comments, random tweets etc aren’t exactly the best way to be perceived.  General rule of thumb, keep it PG, if its not content that you would share with important figures in your life, its time to commence a de-cleanse of ex-rated materials.

4) Be a Strong Communicator

Strong communication skills are one of the most important things for an employer when deciding if a candidate is suitable for a job or not.  Whether it’s on the phone, in person or on in writing clear, coherent and concise communication is key. In an office having good communication skills are valuable and in turn allows for better interaction within the team. Benefits to having a good communication skills will ensure that team building will operate and furthermore create successes for the team. Sitting down and speaking with your peers, allows for you to build relationships that will ensure the business operates on a smoother basis as the team work alongside each other and are determined to succeed within the business.

5) Think outside the box…

If you can show creative thinking and innovative thoughts are in your make up you make yourself an exceptionally attractive candidate to potential employers.  If you can show perspective employers you are a creative problem solver and you can add something new, exciting and innovative to the team, you are in with a great chance of employability.

6) Be a People person…

Graduate recruiters don’t want a Robot they want someone who can work well in a team.  It is very important for them to see them that you’re good with people and a team player. An employer will look for someone who is out going and will bring a good atmosphere to the company. Why not attend business events or seminars? While at work make the most of it and attend work activities and social events, whether its heading out after work on a Friday for a couple drinks or having a night in the office for a quiz night, it will show your interaction with the team and leave a good impression on the employers and other members of staff.

It’s time to just be yourself and let your potential employers get to know the real you, this way they can make judgements on who you are and not who you want them to see you as.
