Job Title: Systems Engineer (LINUX)

Reporting to: Managing Director

Purpose of Job: To play a lead role in the design, development and maintenance of company hosting services.

Main Duties:

* To become a technical authority on company systems across network infrastructure, cloud infrastructure and associated systems

* To manage deliverables from specialist 3rd party technical consultants and vendors

* To maintain system availability and manage the overall infrastructure against agreed SLAs and maintenance plans

* To take responsibility for delivering both client and internal projects on-time and on-budget

* To provide top class levels of communication to internal and external parties as regards project delivery progress and issues

* To be aware of and adhere to industry best practice and developments

* To provide third line support for Company Network Operations Centre front line team, helping resolve issues and offering guidance to the technical team both pro-actively and when requested

* To attend relevant industry events

* To provide leadership and problem solving in assigned technology areas

* To perform other ad hoc duties as required


Education: 3rd level qualification in an IT or IT related discipline with at least 3 years’ recent, relevant experience or 5 years’ recent, relevant experience


Hands on technical experience in a customer facing or operational technical support environment

Experience researching, evaluating and recommending hardware and/or software solutions

Experience in scripting and automation (e.g. Bash, Python, Ruby, Puppet, Salt)

Experience of creating network and infrastructure designs, and any associated bill of materials


Up to date knowledge of Internet technologies including cloud, content delivery and connectivity and awareness of industry trends

Essential technical knowledge:

* LINUX server (LAMP/LNMP)

* Web Hosting (e.g. Apache, NginX, IIS, Postfix, Exchange)

* Virtualised Infrastructure (SAN, Compute, Network, VMware vSphere, OnApp Cloud)

Desirable technical knowledge:

* Installation and configuration of physical and virtual infrastructure

* Cisco Network and Firewall administration

* Database Management Systems administration and tuning (e.g. MySQL/MariaDB, PostGreSQL, MS-SQL and IIS)

Skills: Well-developed IT problem solving skills

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to see a problem or opportunity and act on it independently Ability to write technical documentation

Ability to work effectively under pressure and deliver to tight deadlines Ability to provide pre-sales inputs into customer solutions

Flexible Enthusiastic/Self-motivated

Creative problem solving (out-of-the-box thinking) Work well under pressure and able to deliver to tight deadlines

Other: Keen to progress and develop skills

Prepared to work flexible hours and travel where necessary to meet business need and participate in a 24x7x365 on call rota

Current driving licence (this criterion will be waived in the case of an individual where disability prohibits but who is able to demonstrate the effectiveness of alternative transport arrangements)
